HYSTEROSCOPIC REMOVAL

What is a hysteroscopy?

During a hysteroscopy, your surgeon will place a hysteroscope through the cervix, and into the uterus. This allows the surgeon to see the inside of the uterus on a screen, and pick up on any abnormalities such as fibroids or polyps. Your gynaecologist can also use a hysteroscope to assess potential reasons why you may have difficulty falling pregnant. Other procedures with a hysteroscope include:

  • Removal of cervical polyps
  • Removal of endometrial polyps
  • Biopsy of endometrial lining
  • Opening up of the fallopian tubes
  • Removal of intrauterine adhesions
  • Location and removal of lost intrauterine device
  • Treatment of heavy or severely irregular menstrual bleeding

What are the benefits?

There are a number of benefits of undergoing a hysteroscopy. It is a safe, minimally invasive surgery that requires a shorter hospital stay than open abdominal surgery. The recovery time is shorter, and less pain medication is required after the operation.
