Regular Measurements, Screenings and Tests

Pregnancy is an exciting time for any woman. As the pregnancy progresses, your baby’s size is compared to fruit or vegetable. The obstetrician has ways to accurately gauge your baby’s size in order to ensure that your pregnancy is going smooth and as expected.

What is fundal height measurement?

Fundal height is the measurement in centimetres from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus. This height measurement is used to help estimate the baby’s length and weight. In most cases, fundal height provides peace of mind that the baby is doing well. After 24 weeks of pregnancy, the fundal height is approximately equivalent to the week of gestation. This means that if you are 26 weeks pregnant, the fundal height will normally be approximately 26 centimetres. However, between 37 – 40 weeks of pregnancy, the baby descends to the pelvis in preparation for birth; therefore, the fundal height measurement begins to decrease.

Fundal height measurements are normally taken between 24 and 36-37 weeks of pregnancy. Your obstetrician may also recommend an ultrasound to check the baby’s growth and the amount of amniotic fluid. Growth charts may be used to analyse growth patterns over time in order to give an accurate assessment of whether the baby is growing and developing normally. The ultrasound will help measure the following:

  • The width of the baby’s head,
  • The circumference of the head,
  • The abdominal circumference,
  • The length of the upper leg bone called the femur.

If the baby is smaller than the 10th percentile or has a small abdomen, more tests may be indicated to assess his/her well-being. A percentile measurement that is above 90 may be a sign of gestational diabetes and may require an investigation, diagnosis, management or treatment. If the baby is at the larger end of the scale, cesarean delivery may be recommended. Attending all prenatal appointments helps your obstetrician keep track of your baby’s growth, which then ensures that you have the healthiest pregnancy and delivery possible.
